Congrats! I’ve enjoyed reading your magazine.

I haven’t submitted anything because I feel like $5 for a submission fee is too high. Now I’m reading that you only published the works of the MFA students for many months (and congrats to those talented students). But I’m wondering how many other writers paid $5 fees during that time with no hope of being published. Maybe I misunderstood this part, and if so, please help me understand.

Best wishes to your mag for another successful year.

Hey, Tracie. Thanks for reading sneaker wave. And yes, you have misread the post. We did not open for Submissions, via Submittable - with its dreaded $5 fee - until late March of 2025. From there forward, our writers have received an honorarium for their publication. BEFORE March 25, however, we solicited stories from Pacific MFA students who donated their work to our cause. So absolutely no writer paid $5 to sneaker wave, ever, without a hope of being published. Anyway, we have plenty of operating costs to keep sneaker wave afloat, and not one of our editors has made a single penny for all the work we've put into producing this magazine. In other words, we are not fucking over any writers. Why would we do that? What a waste of time that would be! In the meantime, we're charging a $5 submission fee, I guess, for the privilege of keeping the lights on while we work our asses off for nothing.

Thank you for clarifying that. Makes sense. I’ve enjoyed reading sneaker wave with its longer form pieces. It seems like you’re carving out a niche that’s different from all the flash mags out there. It’s nice to have variety. Best wishes on your journey.
